Orthognathic  surgery (corrective jaw surgery) is performed to correct a wide range of minor and major skeletal dental irregularities.  These irregularities include misalignment of jaws and teeth.  Orthognathic surgery is performed to correct functional problems, although the patient’s appearance is most often dramatically enhanced.

People who may benefit from corrective jaw, or orthognathic, surgery may have:

  • Difficulty in chewing, biting or swallowing
  • Speech problems
  • TMJ or chronic jaw pain
  • Open bite
  • Protruding or recessive jaw
  • Breathing problems

When only the teeth are misaligned, orthodontics can usually correct the problem.  Orthognathic surgery is usually indicated when the jaws are misaligned.  The use of x-rays, cephalometric films, photographs and 3-dimensional models are used to show you how your surgery will be approached and how your bite will be improved.  This will give you an idea of how you will look after surgery and better understand the surgical process and the benefits of orthognathic surgery.

If you are a candidate for orthognathic surgery, we will work closely with your dentist and orthodontist during your treatment.  This is a medical condition and is covered under many medical insurance plans.  Our insurance administrator will help you to pre-authorize this surgery procedure with your insurance company.

After surgery, you will be provided instructions for a modified diet, which may include solids and liquids, and a schedule for transitioning to a normal diet.  Pain following surgery is managed with medication and patients are generally able to return to work or school from one to three weeks after surgery.  The initial healing process is about six weeks, and complete healing of the jaws takes between nine and twelve months.
